Benny was not just any dog. He was a dreamer. But today, things weren’t going his way.
First, his breakfast was late. Then, his ball rolled under the couch—again.
He sighed. “It’s a dog’s life,” he muttered, flopping down with a dramatic paw flick.
“Let’s go to the park,” said his owner, Lily. But as they passed Old Mrs. Pickle’s house, Benny barked at her cat.
“Let sleeping dogs lie!” Lily scolded. “She didn’t even look at you.”
At the park, the sun blazed overhead.
“Whew,” said Benny. “These are the dog days of summer.”
Still, he chased every ball Lily threw. He rolled. He jumped. He worked like a dog!
Then—he saw it. A golden frisbee stuck in a tree.
“I must have it,” Benny said, wagging his tail. But no matter how he jumped, he couldn’t reach.
“Maybe next time,” said a squirrel kindly. “Every dog has its day.”
They walked home. Lily looked unhappy.
“What’s wrong?” Benny asked.
“You chewed my shoe, didn’t you?” she frowned.
“No!” Benny cried. “You’re barking up the wrong tree!”
But Lily crossed her arms. Uh-oh. Benny was in the doghouse.
He whimpered. But then he remembered a trick. He rolled over. He gave her the big puppy eyes.
“Fine,” Lily giggled. “Your bark is worse than your bite. But no more shoes!”
That evening, Grandpa tried to teach Benny a dance move.
“You can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” Grandpa chuckled.
But Benny did it! Everyone cheered.
“You’re the top dog now!” shouted Lily.
Benny wagged and woofed.
“Finally,” he said, “a day worth barking about.”
